University of Chicago alumni can be found across the country in virtually every industry. They are known for the depth of their intellect, the tenacity of their drive to succeed, the uniqueness of their accomplishments, and the value of their contributions towards the betterment of society.
Participation Criteria:
Alumni sponsors are solicited and chosen by the Alumni Board of Governors. Each alumus chosen by the Alumni Board and the CAPS office embodies these principles and has expressed a sincere interest in mentoring a University of Chicago undergraduate student for at least 2-3 days, though many alumni form much longer relationships with their ABG Career Externs. The strength and importance of these relationships greatly benefit the university, improve the current students’ futures, and increase the personal rewards of the alumni who participate!
The Alumni Association and those at CAPS encourage you to volunteer for the program and thank you for your enthusiasm! If you are interested in sponsoring an extern, please contact: Kristen Loyd, Assistant Director of College and Campus Programs, Alumni Association, at kloyd@uchicago.edu.
Alumni Benefits:
Strengthen the bond between students and alumni. Foster a sense of University Community. The university benefits from a strong alumni network.
The ABG externship program provides for alumni a very meaningful, yet short-term volunteer opportunity that allows you, as an alum, to mentor a potential future colleague.
Supplementing the U of C education with “real-world” business/industry experience improves the general value of a U of C degree as students exiting from the U of C succeed professionally.
Requirements of Alumni Sponsors
As an alumni sponsor, you will be required to host your extern at your place of business for 2-3 days during the week of March 24-28th. If you need your extern to fill out any paperwork in advance, especially confidentiality agreements, please email your extern the necessary documents at least 2 weeks in advance. We request that you respect the time of the extern as you would have them respect yours and offer them as many opportunities as possible to talk to other colleagues, attend meetings, or participate in special projects as may be possible. If you will be having another person coordinate with your extern on logistics such as dates, times and locations for the externship, please email that person’s name and contact information to the ABG Externship Coordinator, Koryn Kendall (kendall.koryn@gmail.com) in addition to your extern as soon as you know who that person will be.
You will additionally be asked to fill out a survey following the externship about your extern and your experience hosting an extern to improve the results for future years. The link to the survey will be emailed to you. You can also follow this link to the survey here.
In 2007, nearly 100% of the extern hosts agreed to host an extern in the future. Nearly 100% also said they would encourage other alumni to participate in the program.

My externship allowed me, as a student researcher, to gain a perspective about financing research often overseen by students until grad school, when they are forced to search for funding themselves. I took away not only a greater understanding of the NSF itself, but also the grant system and the critical incorporation of finances in biological research.
I also developed a much greater understanding of government bureaucracy and its influence on science.
