Organization: Cook County Public Guardians Office
Location: Office of the Cook County Public Guardian-Juvenile Division 2245 W. Ogden 4th floor Chicago, IL 60612 | Chicago Metro Area | Google map
Host Name: Alpa Patel, AB'90 (Political Science)
Host Title: Supervising Attorney
About the Organiztion: The Office of the Cook County Public Guardian employs approximately 300 people of whom approximately 150 are attorneys. The Office is comprised of three divisions: the Disabled Adults Division, Domestic Relations Division, and the Juvenile Division. The Juvenile Division is the largest division of the Office. This division is located at the Cook County Juvenile Court Building. In the Juvenile Division, the Public Guardian acts as attorney and guardian ad litem for approximately 20,000 abused and neglected children. The Public Guardian represents these children from the moment they become involved in the Child Protection Division of Juvenile Court until their case closes. When we are first assigned to a child's case, we must decide pre-adjudication whether or not to advocate for a finding of abuse or neglect. If that finding is made, we become the prime mover in assisting the court to determine whether the child should be returned home or the parent's rights should be terminated, and also under what circumstances visits between the children and parents should occur. Most importantly, we advocate for services for the children and families that are in the best interest of our clients. The child welfare system is frequently a very unkind place for children and it is imperative that must be exceedingly vigilant to make sure they are not again abused or neglected by the very system that is supposed to protect them.
