My externship allowed me, as a student researcher, to gain a perspective about financing research often overseen by students until grad school, when they are forced to search for funding themselves. I took away not only a greater understanding of the NSF itself, but also the grant system and the critical incorporation of finances in biological research.
I also developed a much greater understanding of government bureaucracy and its influence on science.
