The publications department publishes scholarship that advances critical inquiry into the creation and reception of all forms of visual art. About the Host: Michele Ciaccio got her BA in Classics in 1996 from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and her AM in Social Science in 1997 from the University of Chicago. She was also in the Classics PhD program at the University of California at Berkeley, where she taught courses in Latin language and Greek civilization. She has expertise in: manuscript editing, Classics and art history. For the past 4 1/2 years, Michele Ciaccio has worked for the Getty Research Institute, first as a research assistant, then as an assistant editor, and now as an associate editor. She edits books on a wide range of art historical topics and assists the head of publications with book development, creating idea and development proposals for the books that have been recommended for publication. In addition, she answers any Greek or Latin language questions both within the publication department and for curators; supervises the research assistants, training them as well as assigning and evaluating their work.
Special Requirements: It is probably better if the extern has a car--public transportation in Los Angeles is less than ideal.

About the Host: As an Associate Editor at Gotham, Ms. Sindler works closely with the Senior Editor and the President/Publisher to edit original hardcover and paperback titles, taking them from idea to finished product and preparing them for publication. Her day-to-day duties include attending meetings, reading and evaluating book proposals from agents, writing book jacket copy and sales copy, line editing manuscripts and writing editorial letters, and otherwise maintaining correspondence with and fielding questions from our authors. Ms. Sindler has been with Gotham for four years, beginning as an Editorial Assistant and working her way up to Associate Editor, handling her own titles and beginning to grow her own list of authors.

Publishing Operations encompasses many of the business functions of publishing: Paper Procurement, Inventory Management, Warehouse Operations and IT. The Projects Group is comparable to an internal consulting group, and focuses on a variety of projects, which may include redesigning business processes, developing new businesses, evaluating potential acquisitions, looking for cost savings, or providing analytical support to other groups at RH. About the Host: Mr. Van Der Laan works on a variety of projects. Currently, his projects consist of (1) a $75MM contract renegotiation for the Children's Publishing Group, (2) leading a team to examine and better the $100MM annual paper spend, and (3) working with a broad cross-disciplinary team to better understand the supply chain to reduce excess cost by $25MM. Mr. Van Der Laan also leads all environmental initiatives at Random House and he is the Deputy Chair of the employee Green Committee. This externship, although brief, should give you a great chance to see how you might apply your University of Chicago education in a business setting. The book industry is a mature industry with slow top line growth, but one that is undergoing massive change because of the explosive growth of digital content, the rise of online bookselling, and ever-bigger blockbuster authors. Honestly, it's a very exciting time in publishing, and I'd be glad to let you see what my life here at Random House is like. If you do have any special interests (sales, production, general book publishing, digital content, sustainability and environmental initiatives etc), please let me know ahead of time and I'll try to arrange some interesting meetings or conversations.

  1. Please go to Monstertrak.com
  2. Once you have entered your username and password on the MonsterTRAK login page under student username and password on the right, you will be taken to UChicagoTRAK from which you can click on the Interview/TRAK tab at the top right.
  3. Once in InterviewTRAK, you can search for externships two ways:
    • Under “include results with” at the top, find “resume submission deadline” in the drop down menu and make sure that 1-21-08 is included in the time window you select.
    • To locate a specific externship, enter the 7-digit EVENT ID # listed in the externship description. Enter this ID in the search box titled “Search only with ID.”
    • To see all externship listings, type the keyword “ABG” into the field titled “Optional Company Name.” All externships will be displayed.
  4. You may apply to as many externships as interest you. Each externship requires a different cover letter, though you may use the same resume for all.
