| About the Organiztion: | The United States Attorney for Southern District of Florida is the chief federal law enforcement officer in the district and is organized as follows: Executive Division, Administrative Division, Appellate Division, Civil Division, Asset Forfeiture Division, and Criminal Division. In addition to the Miami office, there are staffed branch offices in Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Ft. Pierce, and an unstaffed office in Key West. The externship will be an interesting and lively experience, but it is hard to predict court and work schedules. During the externship, Ms. Heck-Miller and her colleagues may be in trial, or doing office work and research. Either way, you will have an opportunity to observe federal court proceedings, and to participate in legal research. Exerns are also required to go through a background check and complete confidentiality paperwork in advance. |
| About the Host: | Caroline Heck Miller is currently senior litigation counsel for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida in Miami, where she litigates a wide variety of criminal cases including human-rights offenses, financial institution fraud, espionage and hazardous materials. Caroline Heck Miller, A.B.'71, majored in English in the College and was editor of the Maroon and active in University Theatre. Ms. Miller became a federal prosecutor after first working as a journalist. She interned at the Washington Post, and, following graduation from the College, covered the courts for the St. Petersburg Times and worked as a reporter for the Miami Herald. She attended Harvard Law School in 1976-79. She was admitted to the U.S. Attorney General's Program for Honors Law Graduates in 1979 and assigned to the Department of Justice's Criminal Division in Washington. In 1980, she was named an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of Florida. Since then she has held a number of positions at the U.S. Attorney's Office including Chief of the Economic Crimes Section and Professional Responsibility Officer. She has performed special assignments for the Department of Justice, including participating in an in-country assessment of the criminal justice system of Pakistan in 2002. |
