| About the Organiztion: | Kalow & Springut is an intellectual property law boutique in New York City. K&S attorneys structure and implement strategies to achieve economic advantage for clients with businesses based in the sciences, applied technologies, luxury goods, fashion, cosmetic and service fields. Our distinctive analysis ensures that we have considered all intellectual property rights (patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret) and calculated the most appropriate combination of actions (licensing, transactions, portfolio management, litigation) tailored to every client's individual needs. We've been engineers, chemists, patent holders, product developers and research pharmacists and we work together to bring each of our individual talents and experience to every assignment. We've also operated businesses, developed anti-counterfeiting programs, structured deals, counseled on technologies and developed trademarks and therefore can relate to many of our client's businesses. The combination of this knowledge and a well-developed relationship with our clients has been the key to our continued success. |
| About the Host: | Mr. Kalow graduated from the College in 1974 after finishing his first year at the Law School (Professional Option Program) and graduated from the Law School in 1976. His college studies focused on physics, math and drama, which turns out to be pretty useful for patent litigators. For three years he did general litigation (securities fraud, antitrust, commerical contracts, aviation crash, Defense Department/NASA contracts etc.) before switching to intellectual property ("IP"= patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret) litigation, licensing, and protection. In 1996 he helped start a new IP firm in New York City, and in 2003 earned a black belt in karate. |

| Host Name: | Sendhil Revuluri, AB'94 (Physics and Mathematics) |
| Host Title: | Math Department Co-Chair |
| About the Organiztion: | Bronx Academy of Letters is a relatively new, small public secondary school (currently grades 6 and 9-12). The mission is to prepare students for college with an emphasis on writing across the curriculum and for publications and in other extracurricular activities. Urban education, especially in mathematics, is a crucial challenge for our country to ensure opportunity and access to higher education for often underserved students. Since it is often hard to experience the real work of education while on an academic-year schedule, this externship is an opportunity to quickly get a broader sense of what the work of a teacher is like. The University now offers more opportunities to continue exploring the field during the term, including the Neighborhood Schools Program and UTEP. Hopefully, the questions raised during this opportunity are ones which the extern can continue to pursue later. |
| About the Host: | Sendhil Revuluri is a member of the founding faculty at the Bronx Academy of Letters. This is his fifth year teaching mathematics, and he now co-chairs the department. For the last four years, he also served as program chair and data coordinator, supporting the organization and administration of the school through work outside the classroom. Before joining Bronx Letters as a New York City Teaching Fellow, he worked at UBS in Chicago and Stamford, Connecticut, where he was an executive director of equity trading. Currently he is involved in teaching mathematics (grades 10 & 11), co-chairing the mathematics department, and additional work in collaborations supporting teacher education and preparation. His expertise is in Mathematics education, secondary education, urban education, school reform, using data for instruction and school change. |

| About the Organization: | As the first settlement house in the United States, founded in 1886, University Settlement embodies the settlement ideal — working from within the community to buoy the lives of individuals, families and the collective whole. To this day, our historic headquarters on the corner of Rivington and Eldridge Streets serves as a vital neighborhood anchor. No longer a literal home for immigrants, as it was in the early days, the Settlement remains a haven for Lower East Side residents of all ages. Here, they can find the best in child care, pre-school, housing assistance, mental health services, college and career preparation, crisis intervention, senior services, arts events, English classes, afterschool programs and more. Beyond the day-to-day, University Settlement consistently looks to the future, pioneering new ideas, advocating for those most in need, and reinventing the settlement ideal for successive generations. It is this convergence of tradition and innovation that makes University Settlement a standout among community-based social service organizations. | Host Name: | Andrew Van Der Laan, AB'97 (Economics) |
| Host Title: | Director, Projects Group, Publishing Operations |
| About the Organiztion: | Random House, Inc. is the world's largest English language trade publisher. The company is a division of Bertelsmann AG, a global media company. Publishing Operations encompasses many of the business functions of publishing: Paper Procurement, Inventory Management, Warehouse Operations and IT. The Projects Group is comparable to an internal consulting group, and focuses on a variety of projects, which may include redesigning business processes, developing new businesses, evaluating potential acquisitions, looking for cost savings, or providing analytical support to other groups at RH. For more information about Random House, please visit: www.randomhouse.com |
| About the Host: | Mr. Van Der Laan works on a variety of projects. Currently, his projects consist of (1) a $75MM contract renegotiation for the Children's Publishing Group, (2) leading a team to examine and better the $100MM annual paper spend, and (3) working with a broad cross-disciplinary team to better understand the supply chain to reduce excess cost by $25MM. Mr. Van Der Laan also leads all environmental initiatives at Random House and he is the Deputy Chair of the employee Green Committee. This externship, although brief, should give you a great chance to see how you might apply your University of Chicago education in a business setting. The book industry is a mature industry with slow top line growth, but one that is undergoing massive change because of the explosive growth of digital content, the rise of online bookselling, and ever-bigger blockbuster authors. Honestly, it's a very exciting time in publishing, and I'd be glad to let you see what my life here at Random House is like. If you do have any special interests (sales, production, general book publishing, digital content, sustainability and environmental initiatives etc), please let me know ahead of time and I'll try to arrange some interesting meetings or conversations. |
