Who is a member of the Alumni Association?
If you earned a degree from the University of Chicago, you are a member for life--no dues to pay and no need to do anything more than keep your address information current. If you took courses toward a degree at the University but did not graduate, you can enjoy the benefits of the Alumni Association--invitations to regional events, five-year reunions, the University of Chicago Magazine, study trips, volunteer opportunities, and much more--by filing for status as an "EX."

How can I get in touch with another U of C alumna/us?
If you are an alumna/us just call the Alumni Association to get the information. Easier still, go to the online alumni directory and find your old friends. The Alumni Association will not release information to non-alumni, but they will forward letters sent to the person in care of the Association.

How can I let U of C know when I change my address?
You can write, phone, fax, or e-mail in your change of address to the Alumni Association, or fill out the online change of address form. The update will take about a week to be reflected in the online directory.

How do I get my transcript sent?
Call the Registrar at 773/702-7881 or fax your request to 773/702-3562.

What's the phone number for ..... (you fill in the blank)?
Most of the phone numbers you will need can be found at the main University Web site; however, if you can't find a number, feel free to call the Alumni Association (800/955-0065). If we don't have the answer right at our fingertips, we'll be glad to track it down for you.

Reunion

When is my next reunion?
All University alumni are invited to Alumni Weekend, the first weekend in June, every year. Many of the University’s units, schools, and divisions also celebrate annual or periodic reunions during the weekend. For the College, reunions are celebrated one year after convocation, and then on every five-year anniversary. For example, classes ending in 2 or 7 (and the Class of 2006) will celebrate May 31 – June 3, 2007.

E-mail Forwarding

Can I get e-mail forwarding?
Yes. The Alumni Association offers you a permanent e-mail forwarding address. Click here to sign up for this free service.

Alumni Directory - General Use

What is the "Alumni Directory"?
The Alumni Directory is a password-protected and secure Web site accessible only to alumni of the University of Chicago for the purposes of personal communication with fellow alumni and the University. After a user is verified as an alumna/us and registers with the community, he/she is then allowed to specify a username and password for future use with the Alumni Directory.

How much does it cost to use the Alumni Directory?
Use of the Alumni Directory is free to alumni of the University of Chicago.

Do I need to be an alumna/us of the University of Chicago to access and use the Alumni Directory?
Yes, only alumni of the University of Chicago may access the Alumni Directory.

If I am not an alumna/us, may I still receive contact information about a friend who attended the University of Chicago?
If you are not an alumna/us of the University, the Alumni Association would be delighted to help you find a friend from the past. However, at the same time, the University must protect the privacy of all its alumni. Therefore, if you would like to contact a friend, we ask that you submit your request in writing or via our e-mail address online request form. For the written requests, the Alumni Association will acknowledge your request and forward your letter of inquiry to the person whose address is being requested. Please include a stamped, sealed envelope with your name and return address in the top left corner. This envelope will be used to forward your letter to your friend. Send your requests to: Contact a Chicago Friend, The University of Chicago Alumni Association, 5555 South Woodlawn Avenue Chicago, IL 60637. For e-mail requests, we will forward your message if the alumna/us has an e-mail address.

Alumni Directory - Registration

How do I log in for the first time?
Click on "New User" (found in the help section on the right). Follow the simple 5-step registration process detailed below:

1.) Enter your Last Name.
2.) Enter your ID Number (see below).
3.) Enter an E-mail address where you can be reached.
4.) Select a Username.
5.) Select a Password.

What is my ID Number and how do I obtain it?
Your ID Number was assigned to your contact file by the Alumni Association upon graduation. Because your ID Number is unique, it is the best identifier for the registration process. The Alumni Directory is located on a secured site, which protects the privacy of your ID Number through encryption. You will find your ID Number printed in the upper righthand corner of the label on your University of Chicago Magazine. If you do not have a magazine available to reference, check the label on most pieces of mail you've received from the University's Development Office or Alumni Association.

Tossed the label?
Fax a photo ID to the Alumni Association at 773/702-2166, and we'll send you your ID Number. You can also call us during business hours at 773/702-2150 or 800/955-0065, or send us an e-mail request at alumni-gateway@uchicago.edu.

I tried to register, but there is no record match for the information I entered.
Check your name and ID Number carefully. If it is incorrect, revalidate your identity in step one: "Enter your last name" and re-submit your information. If you do not detect an error in the information you submitted, but you still get the failure message, please E-mail us at alumni-gateway@uchicago.edu and supply your name, ID Number, phone number, graduation year and degree, and your preferred E-mail address.

Questions?
Please call us during business hours at 773/702-2150 or 800/955-0065, or send us an e-mail at alumni-gateway@uchicago.edu. A failure message is not a cause for alarm, as it probably means that the University does not have your up-to-date contact information on file.

How do I choose a Username?
Your username will identify you to the Alumni Directory. When choosing a login name, please follow these guidelines:

  • Your Username should contain valid letters (A-Z) and numbers (0-9) , and it should be 8 characters long. Do not use punctuation marks or spaces.
  • Please refrain from selecting a login name that may be offensive to others.

How do I change my Username?
You cannot change your Username by yourself. We strongly discourage changing your Username, but you may change your Username under special circumstances only, such as legal name change. Questions? Please call us during business hours at 773/702-2150 or 800/955-0065, or send us an e-mail at alumni-gateway@uchicago.edu.

How do I choose a Password?
Your password is used to prevent unauthorized access to the Alumni Directory. When choosing a password, please follow these guidelines:

  • Your password should be 8 characters long. Do not use punctuation marks or spaces.
  • Use a mix of letters (A-Z) and numbers (0-9) in your password.
  • Do not use your personal information (such as name, birthday, anniversary, Social Security number, etc.) as your password.

Remember, you can limit the damage of a compromised password if you do not use identical passwords for the Alumni Directory and other accounts.

Alumni Directory - Using the Directory

My contact information is incorrect. What do I need to do to update it?
You may update all contact information online by clicking on "Submit Update" (found in the help box on the right). Please allow up to three weeks for processing the modification.

Why is it that my outdated information is still displayed when I checked back after I made the online update?
Please be patient. Once you submit your changes to the Alumni Directory, each record must be forwarded to the Alumni Association where it is reviewed by staff and updated in the main alumni contact database. Questions? Please call us during business hours at 773/702-2150 or 800/955-0065.

How can I perform a search other than alphabetical, class year, and geographical location?
Select the custom search option to search from a combined set of criteria.

Do I have to know the correct spelling of an alumnus/na's name?
In most cases, this is not necessary. It's best to always keep your searches as simple as possible by limiting the amount of criteria you input for a search.

For example, if you were looking for "Jimmy Olson" in the directory, your best bet would be to search only by "Ols" in the last name field. If you weren't sure whether Jimmy spelled his name "Olson" or "Olsen", this method would pull up all alumni that have either of those last names.

When I log into the Web site, it bumps me out of the directory and back to the initial screen?
If you have your cookies turned-off, you will not be able to use the directory. Make sure you have your cookies turned-on.

Alumni Directory - Privacy/Security/Abuses

Who has access to the Alumni Directory?
Only alumni of the University of Chicago who are registered will receive access to the information in the Alumni Directory. No outside vendors or other non-alumni will be allowed access to alumni information and services in our online community.

How secure is my information?
The Alumni Association has taken every effort to ensure that individual privacy is protected. The site is technologically secure, password-protected, and it is intended strictly for the purpose of personal communication among alumni.

When I log into the Alumni Directory, the authentication certificate says that it expired on 12/31/99. Why?
If you use any version of Netscape that is not Y2K compliant (ie., any version below 4.5), when you load the Web site, the authentication certificate will say that it expired on 12/31/99. To fix this problem, you have several options. We suggest that you download a copy of Netscape's most recent Web browser or a copy of Microsoft's most recent Internet Explorer. (Both programs are free to download.)

What should I do if I want some of my information not published in the online alumni directory?
The Alumni Association publishes both a print and an online alumni directory. If you would like any piece of information in your profile marked as private so that it cannot be viewed by fellow alumni, please contact us during business hours at 773/702-2150 or 800/955-0065.

Will alumni who abuse the online community be penalized?
Yes. The Alumni Association will patrol the Alumni Directory on a daily basis for abuses and misuses of our information and communication services. Alumni who misuse information and communication services will be removed from the online community permanently, and could face legal action for failure to abide by the policies and procedures outlined in the registration process.
